ABOUT US

Our story

In 1974 a group of Potrero Hill friends opened The Good Life Grocery on a shoe-string budget and a dream. We joined a loosely knit organization of collectives, co-ops, and community stores called the People’s Food System.

The Good Life Grocery operated out of a small storefront on 18th Street on Potrero Hill for our first 12 years. When a 1,000 percent rent increase threatened the future of the store, the entire community rallied to save The Good Life Grocery. We were evicted in 1985 but luckily found a new home a couple blocks away. We re-opened on 20th Street in 1986 and we have been there ever since.

In 1991 we expanded to a second location on Cortland Avenue in Bernal Heights. In 2000 we purchased the building, securing The Good Life Grocery's place in the neighborhood for years to come.

Today, The Good Life Grocery has over 70 employees and continues to proudly serving both the Potrero Hill and Bernal Heights communities.

About the owners

In July 2021, after over 40 years as co-owner and CEO, Lester Zeidman retired from The Good Life Grocery. The long-time General Manager, Samantha Zuvella joined Kayren Hudiburgh as a co-owner.

Kayren has been with The Good Life Grocery since 1976. She continues to lead the Produce Department, as well as Public Relations and Community Engagement for The Good Life Grocery.

Samantha, a third generation Potrero Hill resident, started her career at The Good Life Grocery in 2004 as a Courtesy Clerk and has been capably leading both stores at General Manager since 2016. Dedicated to GLG’s mission of providing healthy, natural, and fair-priced food to the San Francisco community, Samantha is committed to maintaining and improving the great shopping experience for customers and a great working environment for employees.
