How Much Turkey Per Person? 

Wondering how much turkey you need? Here’s a quick guide to help: 

• Light eaters: Plan for 1 lb per person (cooked). 
• Average eaters: 1.25-1.5 lbs per person (cooked). 
• Big eaters or leftovers lovers: 1.5-2 lbs per person (cooked). 



Size of Bird: 

• 10-12 lbs: Serves 6-8 people 
• 12-14 lbs: Serves 8-10 people 
• 14-16 lbs: Serves 10-12 people 
• 16-20 lbs: Serves 12-16 people 
• 20-24 lbs: Serves 16-20 people



How to Store Your Turkey: 

• Fresh Turkey: Store in the coldest part of your refrigerator and use by the "use by" date. 
• Frozen Turkey: Keep in the freezer until you're ready to defrost. A frozen turkey can be stored for up to a year. 

How to Defrost Your Turkey: 

Defrosting your turkey properly is key to a delicious meal. Here's how to do it safely: 

• In the refrigerator (recommended): Allow 24 hours of defrost time for every 4-5 lbs of turkey. Example: A 16-pound turkey will take 4 days to thaw. 
• In cold water (faster): Submerge the wrapped turkey in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes. Allow about 30 minutes per pound to thaw. Example: A 16-pound turkey will take 8 hours to thaw. 

Never defrost your turkey at room temperature—it can lead to unsafe bacteria growth.
