ABOUT US

Our Story

In 1974, a group of Potrero Hill friends opened The Good Life Grocery on a shoestring budget and a dream.

We operated out of a small storefront on 18th Street on Potrero Hill for the first 12 years. When rent increase threatened the future of the store, the entire community rallied to save The Good Life Grocery. We were evicted in 1985 but luckily found a new home a couple blocks away. We re-opened on 20th Street in 1986 and have been there ever since.

In 1991, we expanded to a second location on Cortland Avenue in Bernal Heights. In 2000, we purchased the building, securing The Good Life Grocery's place in the neighborhood for years to come.

Today, The Good Life Grocery has over 70 employees and continues to proudly serve the Potrero Hill and Bernal Heights communities.

The Good Life Grocery is celebrating 50 years of serving our community with fresh, local, and organic goods! Since 1974, we've been committed to providing quality groceries with a small but mighty spirit. Join us as we honor five decades of good food, sustainability, and community connection!

Samantha, a third-generation Potrero Hill resident, started her career at The Good Life Grocery in 2004 as a Courtesy Clerk and has been leading both stores as General Manager since 2016. She is dedicated to The Good Life Grocery’s mission of providing healthy, natural, and fair-priced food to the San Francisco community. Samantha is dedicated to helping employees reach their full potential, guiding them from entry-level positions to managerial roles where they can share their experience and knowledge to inspire others. She is committed to ensuring The Good Life Grocery flourishes for decades to come, with plans to expand shopping services for customers and create an environment where every team member can succeed.

Samantha and Kayren are thrilled to take The Good Life Grocery into its sixth decade. We are proud to be an independently operated 100% women-owned business!
