The Good Life Grocery seeks an experienced and passionate Meat & Seafood Manager / Butcher to lead and grow our meat and seafood departments across both store locations. This leadership role requires a skilled cutter with strong merchandising instincts, a commitment to operational excellence, and a drive to improve profitability through smart systems, reduced waste, and increase sales.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations of the meat and seafood departments, ensuring consistency, freshness, and exceptional quality across both locations- assuring proper ordering, updated prices, proper signage, product mark downs, and specials, are handled appropriately
- Perform skilled butchery including breaking down primal cuts, portioning, and filleting whole fish
- Launch and lead an in-house sausage-making program using high-quality ingredients and house recipes
- Merchandise with intention—prioritizing full, fresh, clean, and visually appealing cases that invite customers to shop
- Collaborate with the leadership team to drive department sales through smart pricing, featured items, demos, and seasonal displays
- Track shrink, reduce waste, and improve profit margins through tight inventory controls and efficient production
- Develop and maintain clear cut sheets and prep guidelines to support team efficiency and consistency
- Train and mentor junior staff, developing their cutting skills, product knowledge, and food safety practices
- Ensure strict adherence to food safety, sanitation, and cold chain management standards
- Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors; negotiate pricing and source quality, sustainable products
- Collaborate on new product development, including house-marinated or value-added items to increase sales and customer excitement
- Engage with customers—offering preparation tips, meal ideas, and friendly service that reflects our community spirit
Qualifications
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in butchery or seafood handling in a retail or production environment
- Expertise in primal cuts, portion control, filleting, knife skills, and case presentation
- Strong working knowledge of food safety protocols and cold chain best practices
- Proven ability to manage shrink, track cost of goods sold, and improve department profitability
- Eye for merchandising and experience keeping cases clean, full, fresh, and inviting
- Skilled communicator and natural teacher—able to lead and train others while supporting a positive team culture
- Customer-focused and enthusiastic about sharing food knowledge and preparation advice
- Bonus: experience with sausage making, charcuterie, or house-prepared value-added items
- Bonus: experience working with natural, organic, or sustainably sourced meat and seafood
Schedule & Compensation
- Full-time position; must be available for early mornings, weekends, and some holidays
- Starting Salary is hourly at $30-$36 per hour. Salary is competitive and based on experience, specific skills, and certifications.
